ISLAMABAD: In a major development, an accountability court hearing corruption references against Sharif family members on Thursday summoned Nawaz Sharif on August 13 for his first court appearance following his incarceration.
Following an Islamabad High Court (IHC) order to transfer remaining corruption references to a different court, the Al Azizia and Hill Metal Establishment reference will be heard by accountability court Judge Mohammad Arshad Malik.
During the hearing, NAB’s Deputy Prosecutor General (DPG) Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi informed the bench that Nawaz could not be produced before the court due to security reasons and then appraised the judge of pending references.
Nawaz’s defence counsel, Khawaja Haris, informed the court that IHC was to hear an appeal by Sharif family members seeking suspension of their sentences and bail. The court, however, fixed Zia’s cross-examination for Monday and said the defence counsel may examine Zia if he has time left from his other legal commitments.
